A Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (S.A.N.E.) is a nurse who is trained to do medical-forensic exams for people affected by sexual assault or rape.
These exams should be performed as soon as possible after the assault, to:
- take care of an injury, whether or not it is immediately evident

prevent sexually transmitted infections
- prevent pregnancy
- collect
evidence of the crime.
