Try A New Career... Volunteer!!

GIFT SHOP:

There are two shifts in the Gift shop, morning and afternoon, Monday - Friday, and one shift each on Saturday and Sunday. Volunteers working at the gift shop sell items, keep records of their sales, and balance out each shift. You are asked to do paper work, such as envelope stuffing and putting labels on material, work that can be done while sitting at the desk. This is a good job for those who cannot do a lot of walking, yet enjoy people contact.

INFORMATION DESK:

There are two 4 hour work shifts at the Volunteer Information Desk in the front lobby - morning or afternoon. On the morning shift, (8 a.m. to 12 noon), the volunteers update the census book at the desk; distribute the menus to the patient rooms and help patients to fill them out, when necessary; they take mail and flowers to patients' rooms, when either arrives; they pick up the mail when it is delivered to the Auxiliary Box in Administration and sort it to deliver to the rooms. The volunteers at the desk also need to familiarize themselves with the hospital layout so that they can give directions to visitors.

The afternoon shift, (12 noon to 4 p.m.), is at the desk to give directions and to help people find their way about. They also take flowers to patients' rooms when they are delivered in the afternoon. A mail delivery comes to the desk in the afternoon and the volunteer puts this on a cart and delivers it to Administration. This shift is also asked to make up charts; they will be instructed on this task.

They also take patients by wheel chair to the hospital exits when they are discharged, or may be called to pick up a patient in the admissions area. At times, they are asked to help feed elderly or infant patients. They may be asked to sit with, rock or read to pediatric patients when their families have to be gone. A shift on Acute Care normally runs from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Hours here are adjustable, though and some people even work on the evening shift or weekends. You can work out the best schedule for yourself.

BLOOD BANK:

Blood Bank volunteers work from 8:00 a.m. to noon on Tuesday or Wednesday of every week. These hours are set and there can be no change in this department regarding work time. The volunteers check in the blood donors, give them material to read and a tape to listen to. They take their temperature and blood pressure with an automatic machine (no stethoscope) and inform the lab technician (who draws the blood) that the patient is ready. A second volunteer works at the same time calling volunteers to come in for the next week.

Each year, workers are needed to organize and staff the Christmas Bazaar, as well as to bake goods that are sold at the Bazaar. The annual raffle is also held the day of the Bazaar. Raffle tickets are sold for the three months before the Bazaar; anyone interested in helping with ticket sales or organizing the raffle would be most appreciated.
