Lymph fluid has an important role to maintain optimal health in the body.
It is a combination of water, proteins, blood cells and other materials
which help us regulate fluid balance, immune function and remove waste
products from our bodies. Lymphedema is the abnormal swelling of a body
part caused by a build-up of lymph fluid that is more than the lymphatic
vessels can manage. Lymphedema has a variety of causes including congenital
conditions, cancer, surgery, radiation, trauma, chronic venous problems,
and infections. Our integrative approach ensures you receive the best
possible care for whatever your medical needs may be. Early intervention
is crucial to prevent progression of symptoms.
Symptoms indicating lymphedema include achiness, burning, numbness or tingling,
muscle fatigue, tense muscles or skin, joint stiffness, heaviness or fullness
of limbs, non-healing wounds, leaking wounds, thickening of the skin or
the sensation of clothing or jewelry feeling tight due to the swelling
from lymphedema.
How is Lymphedema Treated?
The goal of lymphedema treatment is to reduce the swelling and maintain
those results over a long period of time. Treatment may include manual
lymphatic drainage to stimulate and redirect lymphatic flow, compression
bandaging, compression garments, patient education, skin care, exercise,
and a maintenance program for self-management.
Treatment benefits include reduced swelling, improved functional mobility,
decreased discomfort, improved wound healing, decreased risk of skin infections
and improved quality of life.
