Types of Breast Cancers
There are two main types of breast cancers: female and male. Within these
two categories, there are subtypes:
Female breast cancers: ductal, lobular, inflammatory, and angiosarcoma
Male breast cancers: ductal carcinoma, lobular carcinoma, Paget’s disease
According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, one in eight women
are diagnosed with breast cancer. The chances of men being diagnosed with
breast cancer are much less with a one in 1,000 chance.
What Causes Breast Cancer?
The exact cause of breast cancer is unclear, however, we do know that it
occurs when a small number of breast cells become abnormal and begin dividing
more rapidly than healthy cells. This phenomenon often results in a tumor
or lump within the breast tissue. According to the American Cancer Society
(ACS), breast cancer often starts within the cells of the milk ducts.
Risks factors, such as advanced age, having a personal or family history
of breast cancer, and inherited genes can increase the chances of breast cancer.
How Breast Cancer Is Diagnosed
If breast cancer is suspected, your provider will perform a clinical breast
exam and may recommend additional testing to confirm a diagnosis. Diagnostic
imaging, such as a mammogram, breast ultrasound, or breast MRI, can help
identify abnormal areas within the breast tissue. If an abnormality is
detected, a biopsy may be performed to remove a small sample of tissue
for laboratory testing. Once a diagnosis has been confirmed, your care
team will determine the type and stage of the cancer to develop a personalized
treatment plan based on your individual needs.
Symptoms of Breast Cancer
Common signs and symptoms of breast cancer may include:
A lump or thickening of the breast tissue
Changes in the size, shape, or appearance of a breast
Changes in the skin or nipple of the breasts, such as scaling, redness,
flaking, or dimpling
Abnormal discharge from the nipples
