Infusion therapy involves administering medication intravenously (IV).
Intravenous therapy delivers liquid medication directly into the bloodstream
via a thin needle or a catheter, which is a safe and effective method
that enables us to treat patients quickly. At Calaway•Young Cancer
Center in Glenwood Springs, CO, we offer several types of infusion therapies.
We also utilize infusion to deliver other treatments, such as antibiotics
and pain medications, to help keep our patients strong and comfortable
as they battle cancer.
Types of Infusion Therapies
Calaway•Young Cancer Center offers the following infusion therapies:
Immunotherapy is a treatment that uses a person's immune system to eradicate cancer.
Chemotherapy is a treatment that utilizes anti-cancer drugs to target cancer cells
to prevent them from dividing and spreading. There are many different
types of drugs used for chemotherapy, and oftentimes, patients receive
a combination of several different medications within their treatment regimen.
PAXMAN Scalp Cooling is an innovative treatment that utilizes a cooling system and a specialized
head cap (hat-like device) to aid in the prevention of hair loss (alopecia).
Cooling technology is emitted from the PAXMAN machine to target and save
hair follicles in patients who are undergoing chemotherapy. Although this
is not administered via an IV, it’s often combined with infusion therapy.
Benefits and Risks?
The risks will vary as each infusion therapy is different. Side effects
will also depend on the type(s) of drugs used, dosage, frequency, and
your unique biological makeup. With the PAXMAN system, common side effects
may include cold discomfort, forehead pain, and headaches. With PROVENGE,
popular symptoms may include chills, fever, back pain, nausea, joint pain,
headache, and fatigue. With chemotherapy, side effects can range from
mild to severe and may include but are not limited to vomiting, nausea,
hair loss, and fatigue.
If your medical and radiation oncologists or urologist is recommending
these treatment forms, it’s because they believe the side effects
far outweigh the potential benefit of eradicating your cancer. Although
these treatments create uncomfortable side effects, with today’s
modern medicine, these symptoms are very manageable.
