Radiation oncology is the treatment of cancer with effective radiation
treatment. There are many different forms of cancers and radiation therapies.
At Calaway•Young Cancer Center in Glenwood Springs, CO, our certified
team of radiation oncologists will create a unique treatment plan for
every individual. The form of radiation used will depend on the type of
cancer and its location. Our overall goal at CYCC is to safely and effectively
treat men and women who are battling cancer to help prevent malignant
cells from spreading in hope to eradicate the disease completely.
Types of Radiation
The Calaway•Young Cancer Center offers the following radiation treatments:
Optune® cap for a type of brain cancer called glioblastoma multiforme (GBM)
Vision RT
SpaceOAR (prostate)
4D CT planning (motion planning lung cancer)
Stereotactic radiosurgery
SBRT (stereotactic body radiosurgery)
Benefits and Risks?
Depending on the type and dosage of radiation used and the location of
the treatment (head, breasts, prostate, skin, stomach, etc.), the risks
will vary and everyone will respond differently as each person has a unique
biological makeup. Common side effects of radiation include nausea, vomiting,
diarrhea, skin issues, hair loss, and fatigue. Although exposing your
body to radiation may result in adverse side effects, the benefit of eliminating
cancer far outweighs these temporary symptoms.
