Brain Injury Rehabilitation at Valley View Hospital

Multi-disciplinary, individualized care to help you rebuild independence, function, and safety following traumatic brain injury.

For many individuals with brain injuries, the journey to recovery is not over after discharge from an inpatient rehabilitation program or the emergency department. The brain injury/traumatic brain injury (TBI) outpatient rehabilitation program at Valley View combines clinical expertise and the most up-to-date, evidence-based practice to maximize the recovery and function of individuals following TBI. Our providers work one on one with each individual following TBI to gain understanding of their unique goals and determine a unique and specific treatment plan to help them achieve these goals.

Difficulties individuals with traumatic brain injuries may experience:

  • Mobility impairments such as weakness, difficulty with balance, and reduced endurance
  • Fatigue, headaches, dizziness, muscle spasticity, visual changes
  • Difficulty with functional movements such as rising from a chair, getting in/out of bed, getting on or off the floor, walking safely
  • Difficulty working through functional tasks such as dressing, meal preparation, toileting, bathing, etc.
  • Cognitive impairments such as difficulty with memory, attention, emotional regulation, depression/anxiety/irritability, processing speed, problem solving
  • Difficulty thinking of, processing, or articulating words
  • Swallowing and/or self-feeding impairments

What does rehabilitation for traumatic brain injury consist of?

Brain injury rehabilitation is often a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach that may involve a variety of team members, depending on your specific needs. These include but not limited to:

  • Physical Therapists
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Speech Therapists
  • Neurologists
  • Physiatrists
  • Primary Care Physicians
  • Case Managers
  • Psychologist or Behavioral Health Specialist

Each therapy plan for an individual following a traumatic brain injury is unique, as the plan is guided by the individual and family’s personal goals and impairments. The following list includes potential benefits of therapy and/or services that may be utilized:

  • Exercises for strengthening and balance
  • Management of pain and spasticity
  • Practice with activities of daily living and self-care (meal prep, dressing, bathing, etc.)
  • Cognitive, communication, and behavioral strategies
  • Practice with safe swallowing and improved speech clarity/comprehension
  • Help with visual deficits
  • Guidance for improving sleep/wake cycles
  • Bowel and bladder regulation
  • Assistance with reintegrating to work, school, and independent living

The outpatient rehabilitation services can also help direct you to additional care sources when needed, such as:

  • Neuro-ophthalmology
  • Return to driving testing
  • Counseling
  • Orthotic/prosthetics clinic
  • Wheelchair evaluation
  • Pelvic floor therapy
  • Alternative therapies (massage, acupuncture)

Valley View is also proud to offer our Reinforcing Resiliency course in coordination with our Spiritual Care Team, which focuses on exploration/utilization of coping skills, expressing emotions associated with your experience/diagnosis among others also navigating health challenges, navigating meaning-making in the context of your new diagnosis, as well as celebrating successes and hoping for recovery of any size.
