Congratulations to Matt Stinson, PA-C, who was recently awarded the Dr. Gary Peterson Ribbon of Hope Award at the Calaway•Young Cancer Center’s annual Survivorship event. The Award honors and celebrates the many acts of heroism and compassion performed by Valley View staff who care for cancer patients. Recipients demonstrate an extraordinary level of care, going beyond their role as providers.

The award is the idea and commitment of two remarkable members of the Roaring Fork community: The late Dr. Gary Peterson and Nancy Peterson. The Ribbon of Hope Award reflects Gary’s legacy of supporting the men and women who every day provide direct care to cancer patients. This year, Valley View Foundation Executive Director and Chief Community Relations Officer Stacey Gavrell presented the award with Nancy. In her remarks, she shared the following, “Matt is a dedicated professional, providing personalized care to each patient. His thoughtfulness and intention is noteworthy. Yet what makes Matt a true hero is his tireless advocacy on behalf of our patients. Matt has stepped forward to lead Valley View in the work and effort to offer palliative care.”

Palliative care is a specialized form of care to help individuals with cancer and other serious illnesses find relief from their symptoms and stress. Palliative care can help both patients and their families improve their quality of life. Due to Matt’s efforts, Valley View launched its first Palliative Care program in 2018.

Matt has not only been honored with the Ribbon of Hope Award, but will also benefit from a professional development scholarship donated by the Petersons.
