As the oncology needs of the Roaring Fork and Colorado River Valley communities continue, the Calaway•Young Cancer Center at Valley View is excited to welcome medical oncologist and hematologist Dr. Stephen Mayer to their physician team.

Board certified in medical oncology and internal medicine, Dr. Mayer became a physician as a second career following 15 years as a molecular biologist. He credits the transition to wanting to help patients through the journey of a cancer diagnosis. “Having cancer is complex and I want to be able to help people through that,” he says. “One of the main reasons I became an oncologist is because I appreciate the depth of the relationships I form with patients who have serious, scary and often life-threatening illnesses. I try to help my patients make informed decisions about their treatment options.”

After relocating to the Denver Metro Area from the east coast, Dr. Mayer knew he eventually wanted to relocate to western Colorado for his love of the outdoors. He also wanted to pursue a life-long dream of owning a horse ranch.

“The Calaway•Young Cancer Center is the best cancer center on the Western Slope, so we decided to start our ranch in Glenwood so I could have the best of both worlds.”

His extensive experience providing high quality care for patients with cancer and benign hematology conditions and his passion for research make him the perfect fit for us to continue our work as the leader in cancer care in the region.”

Dr. Mayer’s areas of practice include gastrointestinal, prostate, bladder, kidney, gynecologic, melanoma, neuroendocrine, breast, lung, hematologic malignancies and benign hematology.
