About Joel
Joel Dickens, MD, is a board-certified Obstetrician-Gynecologist (OBGYN) at Women’s Health at Valley View. He earned his medical degree from Texas Tech University Health Science Center and completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at University of Texas Medical School.
Earlier in his career, after working as a pediatrician, Dr. Dickens decided to pursue a new specialty and completed a residency in OBGYN. Dr. Dickens practiced for four years as a missionary physician and surgery director at Baptist Medical Center in Ghana, then returned to work at Valley View. He has also been a provider at Community Medical Associates and West Texas Medical Associates in San Angelo, Texas, and assistant professor in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Texas Tech University.
“In West Africa, we were specifically located in northern Ghana, serving a population of about 300,000. Sometimes there were only two doctors at the hospital at once. While I did a lot of OBGYN surgeries, I was also doing a lot of general surgeries – hernias, bowel resections,” he says. “I learned a lot in that environment.”
When working with patients Dr. Dickens is known for his calm demeanor and is a strong advocate for comprehensive care for all women. His research and specialties have focused on ectopic pregnancy, pelvic organ prolapse and uro-gynecological surgery, using the Davinci robot.
Currently, Dr. Dickens is a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine.
Outside of work, Dr. Dickens enjoys all that the Colorado outdoors offers including skiing, hiking and off-roading, with his wife and three children.
